Were James Bond’s drinks shaken because of alcohol induced tremor?

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To quantify James Bond's consumption of alcohol as detailed in the series of novels by Ian Fleming. DESIGN Retrospective literature review. SETTING The study authors' homes, in a comfy chair. PARTICIPANTS Commander James Bond, 007; Mr Ian Lancaster Fleming. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Weekly alcohol consumption by Commander Bond. METHODS All 14 James Bond books were read by two of the authors. Contemporaneous notes were taken detailing every alcoholic drink taken. Predefined alcohol unit levels were used to calculate consumption. Days when Bond was unable to consume alcohol (such as through incarceration) were noted. RESULTS After exclusion of days when Bond was unable to drink, his weekly alcohol consumption was 92 units a week, over four times the recommended amount. His maximum daily consumption was 49.8 units. He had only 12.5 alcohol free days out of 87.5 days on which he was able to drink. CONCLUSIONS James Bond's level of alcohol intake puts him at high risk of multiple alcohol related diseases and an early death. The level of functioning as displayed in the books is inconsistent with the physical, mental, and indeed sexual functioning expected from someone drinking this much alcohol. We advise an immediate referral for further assessment and treatment, a reduction in alcohol consumption to safe levels, and suspect that the famous catchphrase "shaken, not stirred" could be because of alcohol induced tremor affecting his hands.

Caffeinated energy drinks: risks assumed with consumption when competing, working, and drinking.
Recently, we had a 21-year-old patient admitted for severe anxiety, resting tremor, and chest pain. An assessment revealed that the young man had consumed multiple caffeinated energy drinks and shots with alcohol. Caffeine toxicity was the discharge diagnosis and intoxication. All other drug screens were negative. I was surprised how significant the symptoms were. Based on reports from the pati...
متن کاملShaken, not stirred: bioanalytical study of the antioxidant activities of martinis.
BACKGROUND Moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks seems to reduce the risks of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cataracts, perhaps through antioxidant actions of their alcohol, flavonoid, or polyphenol contents. "Shaken, not stirred" routinely identifies the way the famous secret agent James Bond requires his martinis. OBJECTIVES As Mr Bond is not afflicted by cataracts or car...
متن کاملRiluzole Ameliorates Harmaline-Induced Tremor in Rat
Introduction: Excessive olivo-cerebellar burst-firing occurs during harmaline-induced tremor. We hypothesized that antiglutamatergic agents would suppress harmaline tremor. From this point of view, the aim of current study was to investigate the effects of riluzole on harmaline-induced tremor in rat. Material and Methods: Four groups of Wistar rats weighing 80–100 g were injected with harmaline...
متن کاملEffect of Crocus sativus extracts and its active constituent safranal on the harmaline-induced tremor in mice
Objective(s): Due to unsatisfactory response or intolerable side effects of current drugs, treatment of essential tremor remains inadequate. Thus, we aimed to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Crocus sativus (saffron), and its active consistent, safranal, on the harmaline-induced tremor in mice. Materials and Methods: To induce tremor, harma...
متن کاملOptimal design of a vibration absorber for tremor control of arm in Parkinson's disease
Because the underlying physiology of pathological tremor in a Parkinson's patient is not well understood, the existing physical and drug therapies have not been successful in tremor treatment. Different mathematical modeling of such vibration has been introduced to investigate the problem and reduce the existing vibration. Most of the models have represented the induced vibration as a sinusoida...
